In a welcome move to empowering Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative, the Goa government has announced that they will be offering free 3GB mobile data and 100 minutes of talktime to all youth in the state, EVERY MONTH. Goa claims to have 1.25 lakh youth in the state and everyone will be issued a free SIM card to make use of this.
The government mandated this program on November 25 and the program is live since December 5. Calling it the Goa Yuva Sanchar Yojana, Goa government is said to have tied up with Vodafone for this program. All youth aged 16-30 will be eligible under this program, provided he/she has been a Goa resident for 5 years at the least.
The news comes off Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar’s announcement of this. The program will be deemed void if the user is found to be misusing it.
There are no reports on online registration process though. Users can visit the nearest Vodafone stores in Goa and submit relevant documents including Aadhaar cards, photo and proof of age verification to claim the free SIM card.
It is interesting to note that other states like Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab also offer free smartphones to youth.
